Mix 1/2 cup butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 cup white flour to a crumbly mass. Pat in shallow pan 8x13 inches. Bake in a moderate oven for 10 minutes.
Mix 1 cup brown sugar, 2 eggs, 1 tsp. vanilla, 2 Tbsp. flour with 1/2 tsp. baking powder. Layer over mixture in pan.
Layer over 1-1/2 cups coconut and 1 cup chopped walnuts
Bake for 20 minutes in a 350-degree oven.
